This digital library comprises a number of scarce documents and new texts that are being made available for download. Original text has been reset and all documents have been reformatted to A4 sized paper and are presented as PDF files, which can be read with the free Adobe 'Acrobat Reader'. The documents have a new cover, together with publishing history. In some cases the original text has been enhanced with notes adding historical comment.

How a rifled musket is made at the Providence Tool Company's Armory describes how the company manufactured the Springfield musket during the American Civil War. This illustrated article gives a fascinating insight into the technological developments of the period. The company is perhaps better know today for its later manufacture of the Peabody-Martini rifle. [Published 1863 - 5 illustrations - 9 pages]

The Prussian Needle-Gun and the Snider Enfield reviews the history and state of development of both arms. Each is well illustrated with full length views of the rifles and sectional details of actions and ammunition. An abridged patent specification of 1831 for the original needle-gun is added togther with a photograph of a breech loading rifle, of 1537, which has an action resembling that of Snider's. Sir Joseph Whitworth in 'Guns and Steel' describes how he set about his experiments resulting in the famous hexagonally bored rifle. Also included are details of comparative trials between the Whitworth and Enfield rifles, Queen Victoria's opening shot at the NRA's inaugural rifle meeting of 1860, a comment on Henry and Metford rifles, and observations on the merits of hexagonal rifling. The Armies of Europe provides a valuable contemporary view point and comprehensive review of the European Armies during the Crimean War period. Featured are the following armies: French, English, Austrian, Prussian, Russian, Smaller Armies of Germany, Turkish, Sardinian, Smaller Italian Armies, Swiss, Scandinavian, Dutch, Belgian, Portuguese and Spanish.
