DIRECTIONS FOR USING
ELEY'S IMPROVED PATENT WIRE CARTRIDGES,
and
UNIVERSAL SHOT CARTRIDGES
Charge with powder; then tear the outside case by means of the
tape; place the cartridge in the barrel with its wadding uppermost,
and ram it down smartly. It is not requisite to place a wadding
between it and the powder. [Colonel Hawker said that an over-powder
wad improved the shooting - Ed.]
To Draw the Cartridge. - Screw a wadding upon the worm
of the ramrod to keep the rod in the centre of the barrel, and
then screw firmly into the cartridge. If the wadding of the cartridge
should tear off in the barrel, shake out the shot, and the empty
case may be drawn or fired out.
The wadding attached to the cartridge is intended to fit the
barrel tight; but the lower end of the cartridge should be quite
easy in the barrel until expanded by the blow of the ramrod.
Should the cartridge be too loose, a wadding may be put upon
it without injuring the shooting.
Should the cartridge be left in the second barrel during several
discharges of the first, the same precaution is necessary as with
a loose charge, namely, occasionally to try if the charge has
risen while loading the other barrel.
The Outside White Case, which envelopes each cartridge, is intended
to protect the cartridge from being broken or damaged when carried
loose in the pocket. It should be stripped off before placing
the cartridge in Eley's Patent Cartridge case. [This refers
to a proprietary carrying device sold by Eley - Ed.]
The ROYAL CARTRIDGE is for general shooting, being equally
adapted for long or moderate distances. It will be found an effective
charge 15 yards from the gun, and continues to disperse its shot,
strong and close, 30 yards further than a loose charge. It is
intended for the second barrel at the commencement of the season.
The GREEN CARTRIDGE is only for very long shots, and should
not be used except in open places.
The UNIVERSAL SHOT CARTRIDGE is intended for general use,
or entirely to supersede the shot-pouch. It consists of shot packed
between layers of soft bone-dust, without containing any wire.
It will be found to cover as large a surface as the loose charge
at the distance of five yards from the gun, and will put 25 per
cent. more shot in a target at 40 yards, and with great additional
force, possessing all the advantages and conveniences of the Wire
Cartridge.
Eley Bros. beg to inform Sportsmen that they have invented a
perfectly WATER-PROOF PERCUSSION CAP, which they warrant
to stand immersion in sea water for several days, and remain uninjured
by change of climate for any period.
