Founded at an inaugural meeting in 1971, the MLAIC held their first World Championship in 1972. Events were later expanded to include Zone (European and Pacific) Championships. These Championships are short range events and cater for pistol, revolver, shotgun, musket and rifle.

In 1999 the programme was extened still further with the introduction of a Long Range World Championship. These were held annually for the following three years, after which the current biennial programme was introduced. Due to the nature of the events there are limitations as to range availability, the Championships are therefore currently hosted by Great Britain, South Africa and the United States in rotation.

The core events of the MLAIC World Long Range Championships are:
i) Individual matches fired at 300, 500, 600 yards (mid-range) plus 900 and 1,000 yards (long range) or the nearest metric equivalents.
ii) International Team of Four matches fired at mid-range and long range.

Course of fire is:
300, 500 and 600yds - 3 sighters and 10 match shots
900 and 1000yds - 5 sighters and 15 match shots

Targets score 5 for a bull with scoring rings down to 1, giving a max score of 50 for the 10 shot matches and 75 for the 15 shot matches. A 'V-bull' (or x- ring) scores '.1' and is used for tie-breaking.
