Whitworth Database Management Updates - 2022

  • That's the new year off to a good start with two previously unrecorded Whitworth rifles added to the database; a 'B' series military target rifle and an 'F' series full match rifle. 7 January 2022
  • With further information what was initially thought an 'F' series match rifle, appears to have been an early Whitworth sporting rifle c1859/60, with half stock, and spur trigger guard. It appears to have been re-barreled c1864/65 - it may also have been at this time that a tang sight mounting was added. 16 January 2022
  • Rifles appear at auction, then often are lost track of. Nice to receive an update on the whereabouts of a 'D' series Whitworth previously noted in 2004, 2008 and 2021. 5 February 2022
  • Good to catch up with a couple of Whitworth rifles; a 'B' series military match rifle and an 'E' series full match rifle. Previously recorded in the Whitworth database in 1994; details reviewed and updated. 12 February 2022
  • Whitworth rifle serial no. 670 of 1860 now documented. Previously the only information to hand was a reference to it from 1963, but no details or pictures. Now fully documented. 27 February 2022
  • Whitworth sporting rifle no. 237 records updated. One of a small batch of such rifles with back action locks made in 1859. 3 March 2022
  • Updated records for Whitworth commercial military rifle C465. Previously last noted for sale at auction in 2009. 6 April 2022
  • Details of a previously undocumented cased Whitworth sporting rifle c1860, with original mould and powder flask, added to the database. 17 April 2022
  • Photographs added and details updated of early experimental / trials rifle dated 1858. 27 April 2022
  • Details of Pattern 1863 Enfield-Whitworth rifle F721 added to database. The barrel blank was supplied to RSAF Enfield by Firth & Sons, and the rifle set up in May 1864. 23 May 2022
  • Details of Whitworth match rifle D536 updated. This rifle was first record by the Whitworth Research Project in 1994. 27 May 2022
  • Busy researching and writing though the summer. Just added a new early experimental Whitworth to the database and updated records of three more. Enquiries posted to two owners of Pattern 1863 Enfield-Whitworths, seeking details of underside of barrel - this should include name of barrel supplier, date the rifle was set up and a serial number. 21 August 2022
  • Details of two previously recorded Whitworth rifles updated with photographs. A new early experimental 33 inch barreled Whitworth rifle dated 1859 added to the database. 3 September 2022
  • Details of c1862 transitional Whitworth match rifle added to database. Half stock rifle with straight grip and spur trigger guard. Fitted with rear tang and barrel sights, plus foresight. Spur trigger guards were later replaced with pistol grip stocks. 13 September 2022
  • Details of Whitworth military target rifles B40 and B493 updated and photographs added to archive. B40 is a cased prize rifle with accessories, awarded in 1860. It was competed for by 39 member of Wigan Rifle Volunteer Corps, each man firing 5 shots at each distance, 200 and 300 yards. This was likely with the Enfield rifle. Entry fee was 2s. 6d. Rifle B493 details were previously scant, being limited to serial number and type - full details have now been recorded. 9 October 2022
