Research for a New Book

Heavy Dragoon Carbine

Pattern 1796 heavy Dragoon Carbine

Barry Chisnall and Geoff Davies are researching for a new book on Cavalry Carbines & Pistols of the Napoleonic Era. This will cover carbines and pistols from around 1760 until 1820, including the Eliott carbine, the Harcourt & 1796 Heavy Dragoon Carbines, the Baker Cavalry Rifle and the Paget Carbine together with earlier carbine bore muskets for both heavy and light dragoons such as the Pattern 1779 Cavalry Carbine and the pattern 1770 Heavy Dragoon Carbine. Also, of course, pistols from that same era.

Already they are finding a lack of information in published works and must appeal to collectors for any information based on written records, photographs and specimen carbines and pistols. In particular we would like examples of carbines and pistols with:

  1. Regimental markings
  2. Any features, such as locks, swivels, side plates, sling bars etc., which are not recorded in the standard literature on Ordnance firearms.
  3. Any documentation on the introduction of, or use of, carbines and pistols in specific Regiments during the period from ~1780 until 1820.
  4. Any old prints illustrating cavalry with carbines or pistols.

If you have information that might assist in preparing the book, the authors would much appreciate you making contact via: mail@britishcarbines.co.uk
