Sleep, Joseph Thomas (c1835-1924)

Born c1835 at Linkinhorne, Cornwall, England. Came to Australia in 1856 settling in Ballarat, Victoria, and operating as a watchmaker and jeweller. Joined the Ballarat Volunteer Rifle Ranges in 1860. For many years he was returning officer for the Ballarat State electorate, and was a member of the managing bodies of many public orgainisations in Ballarat. Retired on his estate in South Gippsland.
Military: By 1861 he was a Sergeant in the Ballarat Volunteer Rifle Rangers (1863 Ballarat Volunteer Rangers). 1864 Lieutenant in the 1st Ballarat Corps. 1866 Captain and officer commanding the 3rd Ballarat Rifle Corps. By 1876 Major and from 1884 until his retirement Lieutenant-Colonel.
