Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, 15 September 1877
"Mr. I.L. Allen is a Brooklynite. His age is about thirty five years. He is of fair complexion, tanned a good deal by exposure to the sun; has very light eyes; is about the medium height - five feet eight or nine inches - and not stoutly built, but of wiry frame. He was in the national team of last year, and shoots mostly from the pleasure derived from the sport. He uses the same sort of rifle that Jewell does (a Remington), and shoots from the back position, rising the heel sight and grasping the barrel in the left hand, knuckles downward, while the right presses the piece into the hollow of that shoulder and touches the trigger. In the recent competitions he is just one point behind Jewell, having made 1,219 out of a possible 1,350 points, which, consequently, give him the splendid average of 203 1-6."
