Research Press Digest features newly written articles and reprints of scarce 19th and early 20th century texts relating to firearms, long range target shooting and military history. Key subjects covered in this volume are British small arms manufacture, and Volunteer rifle shooting. Woolwich Arsenal and its manufacturing establishments (including the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield, and the Royal Gunpowder Factory, Waltham Abbey) receive comprehensive coverage in an article from 1858. This is complemented by a report from 1900 on the manufacture of the Lee-Metford rifle at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Sparkbrook. Problems with .303 inch Mark IV. ammunition in 1899 are also discussed. From 1860 until 1889 the NRA(UK) held their annual rifle meeting on Wimbledon Common – the first and last of these events are featured. Rifle Volunteers competed throughout this period, and the muzzle loading Volunteer rifle is described with reference to contemporary War Office Circulars and Volunteer Regulations. Rifle-shooting as a national sport receives a critical review in a study from 1899 that casts an eye over Volunteer and civilian rifle shooting, and the NRA(UK). The training of a Volunteer in the London Rifle Brigade, from 1896, is also highlighted. Footnotes, and illustrations from the editor’s collection, supplement the original articles and provide historical context. The reprints have been freshly typeset.
